It has been a great month of new beginnings and discovery!!
Student accomplishments:
1. 15 students who have never before experienced online learning are thriving and navigating in the virtual world like pros! Our veterans served as coaches for the first month. 2. Each student has created a semester goal tracking system based on his/her desired completion dates. They complete online calendars every week to track and monitor. 3. Each week students analyze progress on short and long-term goals and are beginning to make adjustments in time management and calendars accordingly. 4. Students have begun career explorations and are researching potential interest areas. High schoolers are now matching career choices with colleges and planning high school course pathways. 5. Students watch current events every day and participate in discussions, summary creation and connection-making daily. Direct instruction has been conducted to build background knowledge or to extend meaning. News Topics have included: War in Iraq, potential issues in Iran, healthcare bill, G20 Summit, North Korea, Representative outburst in Congress, new species discovery 6. Students have been building group dynamic and collaboration Level 1 skills: Listening, Respecting and Voicing Opinions, Supporting Arguments, Body Language, Recognizing Challenges in Group settings: face to face v. online, personalities, and Compromising 7. Students have produced amazing content through student-directed science lessons designed by Duke researcher AJ Zullo. 8. Students are beginning to build background knowledge for the Panama trip in Science and Geography.
